Hole

A
man named The Totality of Human Experience approached us, then approached me,
then whispered in my ear. “You’ll never see it coming,” he said, chapped lips grazing the edge of my cheek. “The hole in the wall.”
I wondered why a hole in the wall might pose such a threat then directed my attention back to Candice, who had the remarkable ability of pretending like nothing was wrong.
“What? Laugh about it.”
I laughed. Totality didn’t. We looked up and realized we were 3 of 10 people left in this room, left standing, left of center though perhaps also right.
Later that night, after drinks with Candice and her toy of the night, I made my way home. It was only once I took off my shoes and hung up my keys that I saw it.
