Fortune

I’m about six. As I move rice around my plate my mom tells me to stop sitting on my
feet. She says I need to place my feet under my chair. I obey momentarily. At the end
of the meal a man visits the table with a tray of fortune cookies. I crack mine open
while sitting on my feet. It reads, “keep your feet on the ground.” I stuff the strip of
paper in my pocket and reveal my fortune to no one.
