Dearth of Adventure

We were losing members of the crew. Needless to say, this concerned us. So we turned to vintage photographs of auras and apparitions, to rare recordings of tinnitus and earworms, traced a string of phonemes to a beach beside a rocky bay. And there they were, nestled in among the yarrow and bunchgrass, their voices carrying awhile, then trailing off in the coastal haze. We asked them to come back with us but they put their fingers in their ears and sang la-la-la-la-la so that they wouldn’t hear us.
