I got lost on the way to my date’s house. I messaged her to tell her. She said she would flash her upstairs bathroom light so I could spot her house. I looked around and saw the light blinking in the distance.
The date ended abruptly when, out of the corner of my eye, I saw a sleepy toddler staring at me. She stood up, rushed to him, and scooped him up, telling him it was late and he should be asleep.
On my way home, I thought about the families inside the rows of lightless houses all fast asleep.
