Another Poem for My Future Child (Son)

Hi Rory
I know you're a boy now
and you even have a name
but I loved you
before you had one
when you were just
a shocked expression
on your mother's face
I think God allows men to be fathers
so that they can better understand
the dimensions of love
to see that it goes beyond
notions of sacrifice and romance
Greek words that have lost their meaning
to instead see it as a fountain
of grace and softness before all ages
when the world was still dark and formless
when you were just two cells, not yet organized
into caudal and dorsal arrangements
there was love that brought you forth
by the way:
if anyone makes some joke about Gilmore Girls
you have my permission to crack them in the mouth
it means “Red King” in Irish Gaelic
I know you're a boy now
and you even have a name
but I loved you
before you had one
when you were just
a shocked expression
on your mother's face
I think God allows men to be fathers
so that they can better understand
the dimensions of love
to see that it goes beyond
notions of sacrifice and romance
Greek words that have lost their meaning
to instead see it as a fountain
of grace and softness before all ages
when the world was still dark and formless
when you were just two cells, not yet organized
into caudal and dorsal arrangements
there was love that brought you forth
by the way:
if anyone makes some joke about Gilmore Girls
you have my permission to crack them in the mouth
it means “Red King” in Irish Gaelic
