SEPT 5

Kiss lips to styrofoam,
scenic views of kindness,
what does it mean to be
at the end of culture?
Nothing revolutionary
about France in September,
cruel summer nearly over.
One thousand days one thousand
nights, the church bells ring
at all the wrong hours.
Again, with the elegiac tone.
I am not without cruelty.
And then there’s you:
my most American want.
