might be having a house
to inherit, insurance
to sell, and a favorite
spot on Zuma Beach
where the wind
cyclones a mound of sand
and you feel
your ancestors standing up
and you feel
your descendants standing up
to follow you
back into your days
into what is one thing
worth praying about
a place to be born in
that is also the place to die

Michael Juliani is a poet, editor, and writer from Pasadena, California. His poetry has appeared in outlets such as Bennington Review, Sixth Finch, NECK, HAD, SARKA, Washington Square Review, and Prelude.
