She pulled her dress off over
her head he discovered more
than he ever believed possible
they leapt buck-naked into the
bay of the moon shivering a little
the arcade the plexiglass tank twirled
around them they were choosers
dream assignation aqua-perfection
they weren't in the habit of making
dramatic entrances they didn't think
they could wait much longer it's not
too late to catch up with the greenness
from before the birth of the republic


















Uche Nduka, poet and essayist, is the author of 12 volumes of poems, including Scissorwork (Roof Books, 2022) and FACING YOU (City Lights, 2020). His writing has been translated into Italian, Finnish, Arabic, German, Turkish, and Romanian. He presently lives and teaches in New York City.
